Joseph Malini Joseph contracted leprosy 30 years ago, when his children were very young. Due to the stigma, his wife left him, taking their sons with her.
Maria Robert In her home village of Nyegezi 43 years ago, Maria stepped on a tree root and this event changed her life. Her foot became infected and swollen and eventually it was amputated high above the knee. Now 64 and with poor eyesight, Maria uses a wheelchair but cannot do this independently.
Eliza Nyajala At 80 years old Eliza is frail and has poor eyesight. She lives in Mpapua dorm and relies on leprosy medication to relieve the aching and fever in her legs.
Marita Mateus Marita came to live at Bukumbi twenty years ago, being transferred with her mother who was suffering with leprosy.
Sundi Wana Sundi is nearly 61 years old, and has lived at Bukumbi since 1995. She says, “Outside of Bukumbi people are unkind and hurtful towards those who, like me, have leprosy. They laugh and joke about their disabilities. This is not the case inside.”
